When in doubt, back out - and call before you track.
The decisions you make immediately after the shot can greatly affect the chances of recovering your deer.
• Mark where the deer was standing and where you last saw it.
• Note the deer’s reaction and direction of travel.
• Record the time of the shot.
• Avoid walking ahead, grid searching or disturbing the trail.
• Back out quietly and call before taking up the track.
When in doubt, back out.
Hershey is a chocolate Labrador entering her sixth tracking season. Her experience, drive and steady approach make her the veteran of the Williamson Big Game Recovery team.
Luna is a black-and-white American-line Basset Hound beginning her first tracking season. She brings determination, natural scenting ability and plenty of personality to the team.
The dog best suited to the circumstances will be selected for each track.
Williamson Big Game Recovery provides wounded-deer tracking services throughout Maryville, Knoxville, Blount County, Knox County, Sevier County and surrounding East Tennessee communities.
Tracking services are donation-based. Availability depends on location, travel distance, current tracking requests, weather conditions and the safety of the dogs. Assistance with travel expenses may be requested for longer trips.
Please be prepared to share:
• The town, county and location of the deer
• The time of the shot
• The weapon, distance and shot angle
• The deer’s reaction and direction of travel
• Details about any blood, hair or arrow evidence
• Whether anyone has already followed or searched the trail
• Any available pictures or video
